November 16, 2002 - With every stroke of his paintbrush, Mario Torero restores a mural that he hopes will symbolize the rebirth of three San Diego inner-city neighborhoods.

That's exactly what neighborhood leaders in Stockton, Logan Heights and Grant Hill had in mind when they commissioned the Chicano painter to restore the mural he painted in 1986.

The mural depicting Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar Chavez, Mohandas Gandhi and other peacemakers had been deteriorating for years. Graffiti overshadowed the message painted on the mural: "If you want peace, work for justice."

"I thought the (mural's poor condition) reflected the mood of the community – neglected, old and tarnished," said Torero, who was assisted by other artists. "I wanted to help by reviving this mural as a peace cornerstone and as a visual representation of what is to come for residents."
